Pfizer Pakistan Limited, 17 May, 2014 -Pfizer Pakistan is proud to support World Hypertension Day 2014 under which individuals, public and private sector organizations and governments can raise awareness and unite in the fight against this disease. World Hypertension Day is observed globally on May 17. In Pakistan, healthcare community conducts activities nationwide with the objective of promoting awareness and to encourage citizens to prevent and control this silent disease.

What is World Hypertension Day?

Pakistan bears a significant disease burden in the area of cardiovascular disease, quoting the National Health Survey of Pakistan (NHSP), Prof. Khan Shah Zaman, Executive Director National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease (NICVD), mentions, “In Pakistan, hypertension was shown to affect 18% of adults aged over 15 years and around 33% of adults above 45 years.” He adds, “High blood pressure can not only be controlled but can also be prevented by adapting healthy life style such as balanced diet, regular physical activity, smoking cessation and limited consumption of salt. The prevention and control of blood pressure decreases the risk of stroke, Myocardial infarction, heart failure and chronic kidney diseases.”

According to Prof. Zaman, a significant burden of this disease may be prevented through “effective disease management strategies that include initiating programs aiming to prevent hypertension. Poor adherence to anti-Hypertensive therapies substantially increases near long term risk of stroke and organ failure among patients. Hence patients must pursue daily compliance and long term adherence to therapy for adequate control of arterial Hypertension.”
