Pfizer Celebrates World Pneumonia Day 2014

On World Pneumonia Day, Pfizer Encourages Healthcare Professionals and the Public to Understand the Risk and Take Appropriate Action for Prevention

Pfizer Pakistan Ltd. November 12, 2014 – In observance of World Pneumonia Day, Pfizer is supporting efforts to raise awareness of pneumococcal pneumonia, who’s at risk, and how to prevent this sometimes serious disease--a prominent cause of death throughout the world.1 Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children worldwide.2 In fact, every 20 seconds, somewhere in the world, a child dies from pneumonia.3 Additionally, people face increased risk of infection as they get older due to age-related decline of the immune system.4

Pneumonia is characterized by inflammation of the lungs that causes air sacs in the lungs to fill with fluid or pus, which can lead to a cough, fever, chills and difficulty breathing, among other symptoms.3 The infection is primarily caused by bacteria, though it also can be caused by viruses or fungi.1

“In Pakistan, Pfizer has worked actively to raise awareness about the spread of Pneumonia and its prevention as it creates havoc on communities and creates economic burden for individuals and families together. We have conducted campaigns engaging healthcare professionals, parents, teachers and various other stakeholders to communicate the message of prevention of pneumonia and pneumococcal disease and help give a brighter future, to a healthier Pakistan,”
said Dr. Farid Khan – Country Manager Pfizer Pakistan.
