At Pfizer Pakistan, we take great pride in actively contributing to the society. We believe that such contributions are vital to serving the health needs of the community in ways that are economically and socially viable. We engage in corporate social responsibility because we know it’s the right thing to do.

Through various ventures in philanthropy, and public awareness, Pfizer Pakistan is committed to doing business responsibly, and has historically made significant contributions in the area of corporate social responsibility.

Access to Medicines

Pfizer is committed to improving patient access to medicines and health care by creating innovative partnerships and programs. The aim of such programs is to ensure that patients in need have the access to prescribed treatments.  The programs play an important role delivering information to patients about treatment adherence.

Charitable Contributions  

Through our collection of philanthropic health programs, we invest the full range of our resources—people, skills, expertise and funding—in improving national health. These investments have been implemented in partnership with national governments, international agencies, nongovernmental organizations, multilateral organizations, and academic institutions. Pfizer’s Charitable Contributions policy looks at various local opportunities for provision of medicines, cash and in kind support each year. For latest programs, please see Activities Section.

 

Disaster Management and Relief

Pfizer Foundation and Pfizer Pakistan work jointly in disaster management and relief and have significantly contributed in times of natural catastrophes, such as floods and earthquakes. The Foundation and Pakistan affiliate work together to ensure that we collaborate with local organizations to ensure that help is sent in cash, medicines or kind to the affected. In the period of 2010-11, donations have been provided for flood relief.

Pfizer Foundation Programs

The Pfizer Foundation is Pfizer’s global charity organization that has made significant investments in Pakistan to train physicians, counsel patients, create disease awareness and prevention and empower NGOs under the Global Health Partnerships (GHP) Program. GHP focuses on creating partnerships by allocating grants to various not-for-profit organizations around the world to further the goal of smoking and cancer prevention. In a period from 2010-2013, Pakistan has had two Pfizer Foundation grant recipients National Alliance for Tobacco Control (NATC) and the All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA).

Public Service Campaigns

Pfizer Pakistan invests in disease awareness and prevention by creating public service campaigns. Pfizer has done numerous campaigns on media and in health centers for the benefit of local communities focusing on areas such as Pneumococcal disease, Tuberculosis and Smoking Cessation to name a few. Furthermore, we work with numerous independent advocacy forums and other stakeholders to raise voice on key health issues. A nationwide public service campaign on pneumonia awareness and prevention is ongoing which includes educating general public on the hazards of pneumonia (See Activities section for details).

Health Awareness & Medical Screening

Health Awareness & Medical Screening

This recently launched health awareness and medical screening initiative seeks to contribute towards reduction of disease burden in the society. There are two main components of the program – first focusing on awareness and second one on screening participants with little or no awareness on the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The aim is to spread health awareness and screening principles through these participants to their communities. The first such session was conducted in collaboration with the health service providing NGO Naya Jeevan, for the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) workers at Terminal C Keamari , Karachi in December, 2012.

In 2012-13, Pfizer donated a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for administration to the underprivileged children through various NGOs and health service organizations including the Aga Khan Health Services Pakistan (AKHSP), Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre (MALC), Naya Jeevan and many others working to uplift healthcare for the needy.

One of Pfizer’s key projects has been the Pneumonia Disease Awareness Program in which Pfizer has been on the fore-front to create the awareness regarding factors causing pneumonia amongst the general masses and how to use preventive measures. We at Pfizer are committed to raise voice in public interest on key health challenges

2012-13

The Pfizer public service campaign in the year 2012-13 focused on raising awareness on Pneumonia Disease for Adults over the age of 50 and children under the age of 5. Famous TV actor Sajid Hasan endorsed this campaign that focused on general awareness and prevention on occasions such as Hajj. The campaign ran on mainstream media including television, print publications and radio as well as covering various events targeted towards healthcare professionals and general public. This successful campaign greatly helped in raising further awareness amongst the people on pneumococcal disease.

APWA Play for smoking awareness being staged for under-privileged women in Karachi

Pfizer Global Foundation in New York supports Smoking & Cancer Control Programs under the Global Health Partnerships banner by allocating grants to various NGOs around the world. Pfizer Pakistan has twice successfully managed to secure grants under this program in favour of National Alliance for Tobacco Control (NATC) and All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA) for a combined period of three years in which capacity building for healthcare professionals, counseling training, smoking screening, awareness and various other activities are done in public benefit.

APWA – Women & Smoking program

(All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA) – the oldest and most trusted women development organization is the recipient of the Pfizer Foundation grant for Faces of the Future: Smoking Prevention and Cessation in Women project for a period of over one year. Pfizer firmly believes that women play an integral role in the development of society and this project, initiated in early 2012, aims to impact thousands of women who have the power to eradicate smoking and tobacco usage in Pakistan’s most underprivileged areas. APWA’s project mandate is to spread awareness and help in counseling thousands of women through a strong network of women health workers who go door to door to educate on health issues. The organization has so far been able to implement various innovative programs for training, counseling, surveillance and awareness on smoking cessation and tobacco control.)

APWA Play for smoking awareness being staged for under-privileged women in Karachi

National Alliance for Tobacco Control (NATC), the recipient organization for the first Smoking & Cancer control program in Pakistan focused on cessation techniques training, capacity building of healthcare professionals, establishing smoking cessation clinics, creating general awareness and screening smoking population.

The program targeted HCPs across Pakistan and focused on creating counseling curriculum that is taught through workshops and training sessions. The second phase of the program focused on establishing Smoking Cessation Clinics through a network of physicians who screened patients and helped them in their quit plans. A number of sessions were held under the guidance of the Chairperson, NATC, Dr Javaid Ahmed Khan.

Award of Excellence for Students

Award of Excellence for Students

Pfizer Pakistan launched a unique educational initiative which recognizes academic excellence of students in the field of medicine. The program awards the top performers of Pakistan’s prestigious medical institutes of the country with a medal. The initiative is a form of corporate recognition by Pfizer for the top scorers who study medicine and wish to pursue this noble field to serve the health needs of their community. Pfizer Pakistan’s “Award of Excellence” has gained a very positive response from the Institutes and students.

2012-2013:

Ayub Medical College and Fatima Jinnah Medical College’s outstanding students were conferred the Pfizer Awards for Excellence in the Field of Medicine and Dentistry. Students from Rawalpindi Medical College were also awarded medals during this period.

Pfizer started the vaccine donations in the year 2011 and have so far donated over 10,000 doses of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine even before a pneumococcal vaccine was recommended to be included into the National Immunization Program.

Pfizer conducted a nationwide disease awareness and prevention campaign with the aim to educate general public about pneumonia and related pneumococcal diseases. Famous TV star and social figure, Atiqa Odho endorsed this disease awareness and prevention campaign by appearing in public service messages on radio, print and television. A number of informational programs were aired by engaging healthcare professionals on this subject. This multi-tier campaign involved disseminating information on the symptoms, prevention, and cure of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease including pneumonia, meningitis, and middle-ear infections.

The campaign additionally engaged various educational institutes, independent advocacy groups and other organizations to spread awareness to parents and children. United against Pneumonia, a forum where women from all walks of life participated in discussions on raising awareness on prevention of disease engaged Ms Shazia Marri as a chair in one of the sessions.

In 2016, Pfizer Pakistan's CSR focus remained on improving the overall health outcomes through numerous partnerships and initiatives. Some of our programs included - medicine donation in key therapeutic areas to deserving NGOs, technical capacity building of health professionals on breast cancer, sponsorship of Mothers booklet, health rooms for schools. As a responsible corporate citizen Pfizer will continue to invest and expand the scope of its CSR activities in line with its vision of "Working together for a healthier world."

Partnership with Marie Stopes Society on Breast Cancer Awareness

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing and Pakistan is said to have the highest breast cancer incidence in Asia. There are approx. 83000 cases of breast cancer reported and around 40,000 women die every year. Marie Stopes Society, a social enterprise providing comprehensive reproductive health services, and Pfizer signed a MoU to enhance their health team's capacity and skills for breast cancer examination. Marie Stopes Society has a network of 82 clinics across Pakistan with an expansive footfall. These clinics act as a natural conduit to engage the women for early detection and awareness about breast cancer.

The rate of infant and maternal mortality rates runs very high in Pakistan and thousands of women and new-borns die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. Families having better knowledge of nutrition, immunization, and prenatal care could help prevent many of these deaths. In light of this Pfizer played its role by contributing to Jhpiego, an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University, for the publication of a pictorial booklet "Sehat Say Zindagi," a mother's guide on pregnancy and childbirth.

It is often quoted that "Health and Education are different sides of the same coin," so this time round Pfizer partnered with Sindh Community Mobilization Program (CMP) implemented by International Relief and Development (IRD) to provide equipment and supplies for establishing Health-Rooms in Government schools being reconstructed under USAID supported Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP). Under this partnership, Pfizer Foundation made a cash donation to IRD-CMP for procurement of equipment and supplies for health-rooms. In addition to this support, Pfizer Pakistan also provided equipment (in-kind; using its own procurement process) for one additional SBEP school. This makes a total number of 14 schools which will be supported by Pfizer. These health rooms will go a long way in improving the health outcomes for the student leading to reduced absenteeism and greater productivity.

This initiative reached out to the masses directly by holding the disease awareness sessions and screening camps at the community level and indirectly by collaborating with organizations to provide access to their lower management employees.

REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

A sustainable approach was adopted by Pfizer Pakistan to dispose large quantities of leftover materials. As incineration costs both to the company and to the environment, a unique idea for better utilization of this material was implemented. Pfizer identified 'Gul Bahao' – an NGO focusing on protection of the environment through waste management techniques. The NGO used the recycled material for building blocks for furniture, shelter, building of mobile toilets, production of cheap fodder or by using the proceeds of the waste material for developmental activities, relief work, further R&D in the area of waste management and other such initiatives.

Pfizer provided monetary support through the American Business Council to the Citizen Police Liaison Committee for contribution towards improvement in law enforcement and the security. Pfizer is an active contributor through various platforms in order to improve the overall security environment and tackling counterfeits issues in Pakistan.

Pfizer collaborated with JHPIEGO- a Johns Hopkins Affiliate to train the Local Health Workers, Visitors and Community Midwives serving in remote communities in key disease areas. JHPIEGO is an implementing partner for USAID's mother and child health integrated program in Pakistan.

In 2015, Pfizer remained committed to "doing good" in the communities and worked on strategic partnerships that would help in creating access to Pfizer medicines, developing capacity building skills, supporting good health in schools andgrants to aid relief efforts in the aftermath of the 2015 Earthquake in Pakistan.

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

Pfizer has had a long standing commitment to the Pakistani people during times of disaster and has always played a positive role towards reconstruction and rehabilitation. In October 2015, a 7.5 earthquake struck t Pakistan killing at least 300 and injuring over 2000 people. Pfizer Pakistan presented the case to the global Pfizer Foundation, to secure a cash grant of USD 50,000 to Direct Relief International – an NGO working for Earthquake relief in Pakistan. Direct Relief International is partnering on the ground with several local as well as government and army officials who are mobilizing medical resources to help earthquake survivors. In addition to above, Pfizer Pakistan in a local initiative has asked colleagues for contributions that will be matched by the company for earthquake relief donations to various NGOs.

SAVING CHILDREN LIVES WITH CHILDLIFE FOUNDATION

Pfizer Pakistan entered into a unique partnership with Child Life Foundation which will help save thousands of children lives at the pediatric emergency rooms at National Institute of Child Health and Civil Hospital, Karachi. Pfizer has committed Rs. 3 million towards enhancing the skillset of doctors and nurses working in the pediatric emergency rooms. ChildLife has demonstrated a direct correlation between skilled staff and improvement in the rate of survival.

Pfizer Pakistan with the mission of "working together for a healthier world" signed MoU's with Marie Stopes Society and DKT International to help improve access to Pfizer's family planning product and build the capacity of existing health delivery systems to respond to the world's health challenges. These institutions operate across Pakistan with dedicated health clinics enabling us to access areas and people where Pfizer's traditional distribution delivery systems cannot reach.

Pakistan suffers from an education crises where 25 million boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 16 are not in school. In relative terms about 51% of the total "out of school population" is in Sindh. To address this, Sindh Basic Education Program (SBEP) is being implemented under an agreement between USAID and Government of Sindh, Pakistan. SBEP has provisions for the private sector to support Pfizer Pakistan, realizing the importance of this program has joined hands with International Relief and Development (IRD) – implementing partner of this program in Pakistan to support this cause. Pfizer Pakistan with the support of Pfizer Inc. has committed to provide funds for the development of health rooms in approximately 10-12 schools.
